You may have heard that greeting card retailer Papyrus is closing all of its stores in a matter of weeks. If you aren’t familiar with the brand, then you need to know that Papyrus makes what I would consider to be the most creative greeting cards on the planet. Nothing plain or simple. Each is adorned with adornments, in what feels like a personalized and hand-made creation for someone you really care about, for whatever reason. Sure, each card comes with a price but when you give or receive a Papyrus card then something special is going on.

I’ve given and received several in my life, happily. I’ve actually even saved all the ones from my husband and have them in a collection. Special.

And now in a retail moment, it’ll all be gone. And it matters.

Papyrus is special. Creative. Truly unique. Breakthrough. It’s unlike any other greeting card brand out there. And it certainly beats out anything electronic. IMHO.

Many are blaming it on the Amazon effect, Evite, email, Facebook messenger … sure. But it’s deeper than that. Those options all get the job done but they don’t make their mark the way that Papyrus does. I like making a mark.

We need something special. We need to be creative. We need to be able to breakthrough. And when you want to send someone special a special message, you want it to be truly unique. We can’t let that die in our culture, even in greeting cards. Yes, greeting cards are a part of our culture. We need to keep that urge to be creative thriving in our culture. Even if it’s in greeting cards. Hand-written greeting cards.

And that’s why losing Papyrus matters. A lot. I hope we can find the same kind of inspiration elsewhere, because now there’s a tremendous void.

What’s your experience? JIM
