Apple - WFH
As many of us continue to work from home (if we are fortunate to be able to continue to work), Apple brings us a little comic relief … I had my initial take but I want to know, “What do you think?”
What I will describe as a quirky (and long) video started making social media waves this past Monday. It’s from Apple and it creatively portrays the working from home experience for those folks who are in the creative/advertising/marketing space.
At first I thought it was perhaps too centered on those in those particular industries with perhaps too many inside jokes with perhaps exaggerated problems. I saw a lot of people commenting on it but I remained a bit troubled by it to tell you the truth.
So I showed it to my NYU class last night and they opened my eyes a bit. Now truth be told, these students are either in or entering these said industries so they could relate to the storyline. Their overall reaction was that finally someone (or some brand as I would say) was taking the time to acknowledge what is going on with work these days. And they also marveled at how seamlessly Apple infused their products into the storyline … into the storyline of the stresses, complications, and victories of working from home.

My students also reminded me that in this world of epic discontent and divisiveness and the need to solve extremely complex problems, that it was nice to get some comic relief. And to see people solve a problem that they have control over.

Then the class also told us all that this isn’t the first effort of this kind from Apple or from this cast with its storyline. Last year, the brand filmed a similar story about this particular team banding together to meet a challenge at work. Pre-covid19 and in the office of course. They are called “The Underdogs.”

I get it even more. And applaud the effort from Apple to get us entertaining content that is culturally relevant, showing how their products can add value to our lives as we navigate our lives. With much comic relief for sure.
Like I always say, I learn more from my students than they learn from me!
