Audi Ad Sparks Criticism

Every week in class my students at NYU review marketing activity that they’ve spotted. We discuss and try to learn. “Marketing is a spectator sport,” as I always say.

One of the students brought in a recent ad for Audi … one with a visual that sparked a lot of criticism for being perceived as inappropriate (above). We discussed the immediate backlash and Audi’s quick and agile response, which was a great way to learn about how to understand the marketplace and pivot.

We also spoke about the need for understanding your audiences and for doing research to make sure that your intended message is received as you intend. Knowledge, understanding, and feedback are key to successful marketing. As is the need to have proper controls in place to test that messaging and marketing activity.

Understanding all facets is key to getting it right. Or as I might say … being conscious is key!

My students are goooood … proving that marketing is indeed a spectator sport and we can all learn from each other.
