"I Sing Across the Street" #MusicMonday
My husband and I had a real New York moment this past weekend. A moment that can only happen in New York. A moment that makes me realize how much I love being a New Yorker.
We were having a late lunch at one of our favorite places, The Smith, right across the street from Lincoln Center. We always sit outside at The Smith, regardless of the weather, because the neighborhood and that particular location is amongst the best people watching in the city.
As we were sitting there enjoying lunch and the fall weather, a stunning woman sat down across from us. She was mesmerizing. Her energy soared from her. We could just feel it. So much so that we had to say something to her while she was on her way out. Or I should say that my husband just had to say something.
When he reached out to say hello and throw her a compliment, she lit up. Beamed. We chatted for awhile, and ultimately asked each other what we do for work.
Her response … “I sing across the street.”
“I sing across the street.” As in the Metropolitan Opera. Whoa!
Turns out her name is Leah Hawkins and she’s a soprano soloist at The Met. And at other places around the country. She’s an opera singer. An amazingly talented opera singer. We listened to her voice online and we were blown away.
But here’s the real point: in that New York moment, we got a lesson in humility. “I sing across the street,” was one of the most humble comments I have ever heard.
“I sing across the street.” No ego. None at all.
I even asked her, “do you ever stop and say to yourself that you sing at the &^%&^ Met!” She said, “every day.”
Another lesson in humility.
I will carry this lesson with me every where I go. “I sing across the street” is now my reminder to always remain humble and grateful and giving. Always.
Humility. What’s your experience? JIM
